Click-to-WhatsApp ads: when they win
When click-to-WhatsApp ads beat lead forms for small businesses in India, how the 24-hour reply window affects cost, and how to measure bookings.
In India, many customers would rather send a WhatsApp message than fill in a form. Click-to-WhatsApp ads, Meta ads that open a chat instead of a form or a website, use that. They’re not always the right choice, though.
01 · When they win
The sale happens in a conversation. Salons, clinics, coaching classes, home services, local shops: anything where the customer has a few questions before booking. A chat answers them on the spot.
Someone can reply fast. The chat starts warm. If it gets a reply in minutes, it often turns into a booking. If it waits until tomorrow, it usually doesn’t.
Trust matters. A real person replying on WhatsApp feels safer than a form that disappears into an inbox.
02 · When a form is better
You need details before you can help. If you need an address, a budget or a date before you can quote, a form collects it in one go instead of over ten messages.
Nobody can answer chats. A form waits politely. A chat that goes unanswered looks worse than no ad at all.
You need to qualify hard. A higher-intent form with a qualifying question filters people before they reach you. A chat lets anyone in.
03 · The reply window affects cost
WhatsApp Business Platform messages are charged per message, depending on the message type and the customer’s country. This has been the model since 1 July 2025. Two windows matter (Meta’s pricing documentation):
- The customer service window. When a customer messages you, a 24-hour window opens. Free-form replies can only be sent inside it, and each new message from the customer restarts the timer.
- The free entry point window. When the chat came from a click-to-WhatsApp ad and you reply within that first 24 hours, Meta’s current documentation says a longer window opens, up to 7 days, in which your messages to that customer are free. It applies to chats started from the WhatsApp mobile apps.
The practical rule doesn’t change: reply the same day. It’s better for the customer, and it’s cheaper for you. If you use the free WhatsApp Business app rather than the API, these charges don’t apply, but the speed still does.
04 · How to measure it
A chat is not a customer. The number to track is how many chats became bookings.
- In Ads Manager, track conversations started and cost per conversation.
- On WhatsApp Business, use labels: “new”, “quoted”, “booked”. At the end of the week, count the booked ones.
- Divide spend by bookings. That’s your cost per customer, the only number that tells you whether to spend more.
05 · A setup that works
- One campaign with a messages goal, sending people to WhatsApp.
- A pre-filled first message that tells you which ad they came from.
- A greeting and quick replies set up for the questions everyone asks.
- One person responsible for replying, with a target time.
- Labels, counted weekly.
If you’re not sure whether chats or forms suit your business, that’s one of the first things I look at in the free 15-minute review. More on how I run campaigns on the Meta Ads page.
Click-to-WhatsApp works when the sale happens in a conversation and someone can reply fast. If neither is true, use a form.
