01 · The brief
A designer who builds websites for restaurants, gyms, clinics and local shops needs one page that does the work of a five-page site: say what he does, prove it with real links, and get a name, an email and a message.
The temptation with a page like this is to make it a mood board. The brief was the opposite. A small-business owner arrives with one question — “can you make my site look like that?” — so the page had to answer that with links they can open, not with adjectives.
02 · What I built
Eleven numbered sections on one page: the promise, the designer, six services, the industries, five live projects, what every site includes, a five-step process, reasons to choose him, before-and-after comparisons for three industries, a closing call to action, and the contact form.
Every project in the portfolio block is a live link, including the two restaurant builds in this section of my own work. That is the point of the page: the reader leaves the site and lands on something real.
03 · What’s on the page
- Oversized grotesque headings with one red accent word per screen, set on a paper ground
- A geometric collage in the hero instead of a stock photo, so nothing on the page looks bought
- Section numbers in the margin, which make a long single page feel like a list you can finish
- A four-field form (name, email, business, message) with no required phone number
- Services written for industries, not for tools: “restaurant websites” rather than “responsive design”
04 · What I’d fix next
The page has a canonical address and Open Graph tags, but no structured data. For a local service business, a Person and a ProfessionalService block, plus the city, is cheap to add and it is what search engines and AI assistants read when they are trying to describe who you are and where you work.
The services are also counted in the copy, which means every change to the list is a change to two places. That is a maintenance trap, not a bug.
The single-page choice costs it the ability to rank for six different service searches. That was the trade — one strong page instead of six thin ones — and it is the right one until there is enough work to fill six honest pages.
05 · What it means for your site
A portfolio only persuades when the work is one click away and still live. If you are selling websites, put the links in the first two screens and check them every month, because a dead link in a portfolio is worse than no portfolio at all.
